That Gum You Like Is Back In Style

Typical Little Hipster Ways

Is there some sort of rule — unwritten or otherwise — which requires, under threat of some sort of unspecified penalty, hipster baristas to play unlistenable music at completely inappropriate volumes? Is this actually a hipster thing, or some sort of hipster wannabe thing? Am I just getting old or is this actually irritating and they, in their typical little hipster ways, simply don’t care?

i think it’s an adolescent thing. (some people remain adolescents well into their 30s, or longer depending on the person.) it’s like when your kids forget how to use their “inside voice”.

i like blasting unlistenable music at completely inappropriate volumes as much as the next guy, but not when i’m trying to take their money. so it’s really a rather unsupportable business model.

when i was a shiftless hipster idiot working at an espresso bar, i tried to dress down a young co-worker who kept showing up to work late. his look of abject incomprehension stopped me dead in the middle of my tirade. i realized that in his world, getting anywhere on time was completely irrelevant and insignificant. all that mattered to this individual was an unfettered daily plunge into a profoundly self-centered hedonism. it was a “when worlds collide” moment. it was kind of like trying to explain darwinism to a southern baptist.
