Clever, Classless, And Free

Marilyn Shannon Is A Tool

In the video report on the effort to help bigots proudly stand up for their bigotry, the head bigot of Bigots, AGAIN! has this to say about the laws which her petitions are meant to kill: “This isn’t about discrimination, this is about affirmative action.”

It’s difficult to know where to start. But let’s start here: Affirmative action, of course, is a response to discrimination.

Regardless of whether or not one believe that the initial premise of affirmative action has become bastardized into something less desirable, that initial premise always has been perfectly sound: Governmental action to address entrenched structures and policies (both historic and current) which discriminate against a class of people.

So, if this is about affirmative action as Shannon claims, than this also is about discrimination.

But, of course, what lies behind the statement is the mistaken belief that affirmative action is about unjustly giving something to a group of people who don’t deserve it. One only makes a statement which uses the term as a criticism (if not an outright slur) if one believes that systemic (or systematic) discrimination doesn’t exist, and that affirmative action merely is an unwarranted attack upon decent and proper people.

Color me unsurprised that a bigot would make such a statement with a straight face. Puns (all of them) fully intended.
