Short of the ALCS in 2004, I’m not sure I’ve ever witnessed a more astonishing thing. For only the fifth time in Major League history, a team hit four consecutive homeruns. It was only the second time it had ever been done against a single pitcher. It was the first time Red Sox hitters had done it. The only other time it happened against a single pitcher, Terry Francona’s father was one of the batters. The last time four consecutive homeruns were hit (last year), J. D. Drew was one of the batters, as he was again tonight. As for the end, the Red Sox fan in me never wanted to see A-Rod come to the plate. But the baseball fan in me knew that there was no other proper way to complete the sweep than by ending it with him. As I said earlier this series, never an easy langourous journey. As I also said earlier: Now get ready to do it all over again next weekend.

One more time, for the sweep at Fenway. I’ll be here shortly. And then we do it all again next week in the Bronx.
“Big special interests are passionate in their defense of City Hall,” writes David Kelleher in today’s Theo. What he doesn’t write is that what he means there is “labor unions”. And what he doesn’t write is that what he doesn’t mean by “special interests” are his fellow supporters of Curiously-Strong Mayor: QWest Services Corporation, PacifiCorp, Kalberer Company, Bay City, LLC (read: Greg Goodman), Melvin Mark, Jr., Wells Fargo Bank, Mark Group Partnership #5 (read: Melvin Mark, Jr.), Wayne Kingsley (on the board of the Portland Business Alliance). Generally speaking, I think more Portlanders, if they have to choose between a position backed by the special interests of big business or one backed the special interests of labor unions, they’d chose the latter.

Everyone rested and recovered? If not, it might be too late. In less than three hours, we see if Josh Beckett can turn last night’s out-of-nowhere win into two games in a row.
It’s nice to know that serving in Vietnam and suffering as a prisoner of war hasn’t prevented John McCain from seeing bombing other human beings into non-existence as a funny thing, to the point of dismissing an entire country of other human beings by saying, when asked if his “joke” was insensitive: “Insensitive to what? The Iranians?”
So said someone at the back of the bar on a sunny mid-April evening after the eighth-inning explosion led to a suddenly-tense ninth — and that after the game seemed a lost cause, what with the Red Sox playing much of it like a second-rate team. Never an easy languorous journey for this rivalry. Youk getting flat-out whacked on the hand. Papi slide-tripping into second base. Coco of all people exploding with a two-run triple. Schilling giving up two homers to A-Rod. Rivera blowing his second save. And now we do it all again in roughly seventeen hours.
Oh, look. Amongst the latest “citizen” campaign contributions to Team Potter are $2,500 from QWest Services Corporation, $4,000 from PacifiCorp, and $1,000 from Kalberer Company, yet another one of the Portland area’s property owners and member of the Portland Business Alliance. I’m sure all of these fine commercial enterprises are just looking out for the City’s best interests.
Because we’re days away from the start of advance ticket sales for our two charity screenings of Serenity on June 22 and 23, to benefit Equality Now and the Women’s Film Initiative. This is a good time to subscribe to event updates via feed or via email, whichever is most convenient for you.
