Over on the other coast, New York City is preparing a surveillance society, with a plan to install hundreds of cameras and microphones around the City.
Here’s what would be my precondition for even having a discussion of establishing widespread surveillance of the public: Beforehand, the corresponding police department would be required to install cameras and microphones in their own buildings (barring those areas which would interfere with the rights of suspects and/or defendants), with the feeds made publicly available in real-time on the Web.
There shouldn’t even be any discussion of 24/7 audiovisual access to the public for the police until and unless there is 24/7 audiovisual access to the police for the public.
