Fly Away Little Butterfly, Just Flutter Away

Emilie Boyles, A Born Politician

At some point this afternoon, embattled City Council candidate Emilie Boyles issued a press release in response to the problems with her campaign paperwork, uncovered by Theo.

I’ll save you the trouble of having to read the release. It boils down to this: “God, God, God, not my fault, God, God, God, blame Sten, God, God.”

She’s actually blaming her hiring of an apparent scammer who collected apparently forged signatures for Boyles on Erik Sten, charging that it’s possible that his publicly-financed campaigns law was nothing more than a set-up designed to keep grassroots candidates out of local politics. She goes on to compare herself to Joseph. Yes, the Biblical one.

This very quickly has become one of those “I just threw up in my mouth a little bit” moments.

Addendum: Why is it that the politicians who turn first and loudest to pronouncements of their godliness always also seem to be the last ones to take any real responsibility for their own actions?

Addendum: The problems with Boyles campaign paperwork are an issue of public interest and import. They would be even if this were a privately-funded campaign, but they are even more-so due to her use of public funds.

So when this issue of public interest and import arose what did Boyles do? She went into hiding. If elected, is that what she’d do when a particularly thorny decision came before City Council?

Addendum: Then there’s Benkay’s paragraph-by-paragraph deconstruction of the press release.

It reminds me of something I thought of while running to the Plaid for beer: How many people did Boyles have working on her campaign at the time in question? Because if it was only the one who collected these suspect signatures, one has to wonder how being unable to manage a single person qualifies her to manage entire City bureaus.

Volodymr Golovan has been terminated from the Boyles for Portland campaign. The campaign has asked Mr. Golovan to return funds paid to him by the campaign and to be fiscally responsible for damages to the campaign and the City of Portland.

Wonder how that’s gonna work out for poor Emilie. If I’m Volodymr, I’m leaving town for a few weeks. That money is as good as gone.
